Lesson 5.1: Role of the apprentice

Apprentices should make the most out of their apprenticeship experience by setting clear goals, seeking feedback, networking with colleagues, and taking on challenging projects.

They can achieve this by being proactive, asking questions, and showing enthusiasm for learning can also enhance the apprenticeship experience and may lead to potential job offers.

During the apprenticeship, it is expected that the apprentice should:

  1. Assist and contribute to the team – learn how the company works and how you can support your team.
  2. Learn and gain experience – learn as much as possible from the work experience, which may include technical and soft skills.
  3. Job shadow – “shadowing” someone as they perform their daily duties, observing their activities, and learning what the role entails via indirect experience.
  4. Take on an increasing amount of responsibility – as experience builds, be entrusted with more critical tasks.
  5. Network – involves building relationships with bosses, colleagues, and customers and clients.
  6. Make a career call – continue in the field of the apprenticeship or try something else entirely.
