Lesson 6.5 Mentor Resources: Build a Professional Profile for an Apprentice

You are encouraged to approach resource creatively. Open a Word document or grab a pen and paper – whatever works best for you – and start building the profile for a hypothetical apprentice. This activity will helo you understand how to support apprentices in creating a meaningful career plan, indentifying their transferable skills, and recognizing key networking apportunities.

  • Skills Inventory
  • Career Pathway
  • Networking Opportunities
 
 

 

Helping questions for the assignment: 

 

1. Skills Inventory: 

  • What hard skills has the apprentice developed through their apprenticeship (e.g., technical skills, use of specific tools, software proficiency)? 
  • What soft skills has the apprentice demonstrated (e.g., communication, teamwork, leadership, time management)? 
  • Are there any non-traditional skills the apprentice has gained from life experiences or hobbies (e.g., problem-solving, multitasking, creativity)? 
  • How do these skills align with the apprentice’s career goals? 

 

2. Career Pathway: 

  • What are the apprentice’s short-term career goals (e.g., completing the apprenticeship, gaining full-time employment)? 
  • What long-term career goals does the apprentice have (e.g., becoming a manager, transitioning to a different role within the industry)? 
  • What steps should the apprentice take to achieve these goals (e.g., additional training, certifications, gaining experience in a particular area)? 
  • Are there any barriers or challenges the apprentice might face in achieving these goals, and how can they overcome them? 

 

3. Networking Opportunities: 

  • Who are the key people the apprentice should connect with (e.g., HR professionals, industry mentors, managers)? 
  • Are there any professional organizations, industry events, or online communities that could help the apprentice expand their network? 
  • What specific benefits could these networking connections provide (e.g., career advice, job leads, mentorship)? 
  • How should the apprentice approach these individuals or opportunities (e.g., informational interviews, networking events, LinkedIn outreach)? 

 

4. Additional Elements for the Profile: 

  • What makes the apprentice stand out from others in their field (e.g., unique experiences, certifications, personal qualities)? 
  • How can the apprentice present themselves in a way that highlights their strengths and potential (e.g., using a professional tone, highlighting key achievements)? 
  • Are there any testimonials or recommendations from colleagues, mentors, or supervisors that could be included in the profile to showcase the apprentice’s value?
