Lesson 5.2: Effective mechanisms for securing additional support required to apprentices with fewer opportunities or experiencing some form of disadvantage
Offer longer apprenticeship programmes – Accommodating individual needs demands a certain degree of flexibility in the curricula and alternative training and testing methodologies.
Offer partial qualification option – Training assistance to support the apprentices with fewer opportunities or experiencing some form of disadvantage with administrative tasks
Sensitise company employees – Supervisors and co-workers have to be sensitised about apprentices with fewer opportunities or experiencing some form of disadvantage in the workplace and the specific needs of the trainees.
Create positive and helpful work-culture – Senior managers should signal clearly their commitment to apprentices with fewer opportunities or experiencing some form of disadvantage and make information on disability etiquette available to all employees.
Ensure accessibility – Easy entrance access to and movement around the premises and adaptations to workstation, tools and equipment.
Provide support to strengthen social skills and self-confidence – Psychological support and training on workplace relations, work hierarchies and customer care should precede company placement.
