Lesson 8.2: Case Study: Airbus on-the-job specific support plans

Company Overview

Airbus is a European multinational aerospace corporation, one of the largest in the world, known for designing, manufacturing, and delivering aerospace products, services and solutions. Airbus is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace, providing various support mechanisms for apprentices from disadvantaged backgrounds or with fewer opportunities.

Apprentices with low economic status

Support Strategy:

  • Financial assistance: airbus offers financial support to cover transportation, meals and essential learning materials to reduce financial stress on apprentices.
  • Resource access: apprentices have access to all necessary tools and technology required for their training and job tasks.
  • Flexible work arrangements: flexible scheduling options are available to accommodate apprentices who may have other commitments.

Sophie, an apprentice in aircraft maintenance from a low socioeconomic background, receives a monthly travel allowance and meal vouchers. Airbus provides her with a toolkit and necessary protective equipment at no cost. She is allowed to start her workday later to manage her responsibilities at home.

Apprentices with special needs

Support Strategy:

  • Accessible work environment: airbus ensures that facilities are equipped with ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms, and ergonomic workstations.
  • Assistive technologies: the company provides assistive technologies like screen readers, speech-to-text software, and adjustable desks.
  • Personalised support plans: each apprentice receives a tailored support plan addressing his or her specific needs.

Mark, an apprentice with a visual impairment, uses screen reader software provided by Airbus to assist with his tasks. His workstation includes an adjustable desk and other ergonomic features. Mark’s mentor checks in regularly to ensure his needs are being met and to provide additional support.

Apprentices with Language Barriers

Support Strategy:

  • Language training programs: Airbus offers language courses focusing on both general and technical language skills needed in the aerospace industry.
  • Peer support and mentoring: Apprentices are paired with bilingual mentors or peers who can help them navigate language challenges.
  • Visual and interactive learning tools: The company uses visual aids, interactive software, and apps to facilitate learning and comprehension.

Hana, an apprentice from Turkey, attends English language classes provided by Airbus to improve her communication skills. She is paired with a mentor who speaks both Turkish and English, helping her understand technical terms and processes. Visual aids and diagrams are used frequently in her training.

Apprentices from Ethnic Minority Backgrounds

Support Strategy:

  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity training: Airbus conducts training programs to educate all employees on cultural sensitivity and the importance of diversity.
  • Mentorship programs: ethnic minority apprentices are paired with mentors who can provide support and guidance tailored to their cultural backgrounds.
  • Inclusive culture and events: Airbus celebrates diverse cultures through various events and encourages sharing of different perspectives.

Ahmed, an apprentice in avionics from an ethnic minority background, participates in Airbus’ cultural awareness training. He is paired with a mentor who shares similar cultural experiences and can provide relevant support. Airbus hosts cultural events and encourages Ahmed to share his cultural heritage with his colleagues.
