Lesson 10.3: Case Study 2

Background: Carlos, a 19-year-old apprentice from a marginalised community, is interested in pursuing a career in graphic design. He has basic skills but lacks exposure to different design roles and industries.

Strategy:

  • Job shadowing: Carlos’s mentor arranges job shadowing opportunities with graphic designers at various agencies and studios. Carlos spends time observing different design projects and processes.
  • Portfolio development: Carlos is guided in creating a strong portfolio that showcases his best work. His mentor helps him curate and present his designs effectively.
  • Design competitions: Carlos is encouraged to participate in national and local design competitions to gain exposure and build his resume.

Outcome:

  • Increased exposure: Carlos gains a deeper understanding of various design roles and industry practices through job shadowing.
  • Portfolio strengthened: The feedback and experience from his job shadowing opportunities help him refine his portfolio.
  • Recognition: Carlos’s participation in design competitions leads to recognition and an offer for a freelance design role, helping him establish himself in the industry.
