Lesson 10.1: Communication and interpersonal skills

Communication and interpersonal skills are among the most important soft skills, as they guarantee successful teamwork and better performance at work. Improving these skills involves explaining what effective and efficient communication is and ensuring that the learner understands its importance. Some key characteristics of efficient communication include:

Clear and concise communication: teaching apprentices to communicate clearly without using too many words is essential. This means delivering messages that are straightforward and easy to understand.

  • Activity: practice writing and delivering short, precise messages on various topics.

Face-to-Face Communication: whenever possible, encourage face-to-face communication. This type adds more layers of information through body language and facial expressions, making the exchange clearer and more impactful.

  • Activity: set up regular in-person meetings or video calls to practice face-to-face communication skills.

Not afraid to ask: creating an inclusive WBL environment where apprentices feel supported and are not afraid to ask for feedback or clarification is crucial. Encourage asking questions to foster better understanding and cooperation.

  • Activity: organize monthly communication sessions where apprentices can freely ask questions and discuss challenges.

Minimizing distractions: during communication, apprentices should avoid distractions such as online devices. This helps them focus and communicate more effectively.

  • Activity: practice distraction-free communication scenarios where apprentices engage in conversations without interruptions.

Active listening: active listening involves fully focusing on the speaker, understanding their message, and responding thoughtfully. It helps avoid conflicts and misunderstandings, positively affecting productivity and relationships.

  • Activity: pair up apprentices to share personal stories or work-related experiences. The listener must summarize and provide feedback on what they understood.
