Lesson 10.3: Case Study 1

Background: Amina, a 22-year-old apprentice from a low-income background, is pursuing a career in software development. She has completed her basic training but lacks practical experience and professional connections in the tech industry.

Strategy:

  • LinkedIn optimisation: Amina’s mentor helps her create a polished LinkedIn profile, including a professional photo, a compelling summary, and detailed descriptions of her projects and skills.
  • Informational interviews: The mentor assists Amina in reaching out to software developers and tech professionals for informational interviews. They practice designing emails and preparing questions.
  • Networking Events: Amina is encouraged to attend local tech meetups and industry conferences. Her mentor helps her prepare an elevator pitch and provides guidance on making meaningful connections.

Outcome:

  • Networking success: Amina successfully connects with several industry professionals and gains valuable insights into the tech field.
  • Job shadowing opportunity: one of the contacts she made offers her a job shadowing opportunity, allowing her to observe and learn about the day-to-day responsibilities of a software developer.
  • Job offer: through a connection made at a tech conference, Amina secures a junior developer position at a reputable company, significantly advancing her career.
