There are different ways to create good and suitable on-the-job support plan depending on the apprentices and their disadvantages and needs but every successful support plan should include:
- Clear objectives and goals: the plan sets specific performance objectives aligned with the apprentice’s role and responsibilities. In order to make objective clear and goals reachable, you as a mentor can use the SMART goals. Objectives are often formulated using the SMART criteria—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This ensures that goals are clear and attainable.
- Support mechanisms: an on the needs developed support is very important when it comes to making the plan works. Only with strong mentorship and regular meetings and check-ups, the support plan can work and give results.
- Monitoring and feedback: monitoring apprentice progress through assignments and giving feedback is crucial to make the support plan valuable for both, mentor and apprentice
